Hand-painted scrolls are a distinguished craft from the Darjeeling Hills, showcasing detailed portraits and scenes from Tibetan/Buddhist and Nepali cultures on black cotton fabric. These artworks are entirely hand-painted, adhering to a traditional methodology where outlines are sketched with arrowroot powder, allowing artists to demonstrate their precision through freehand drawing with various brush strokes and colors. The choice of a black canvas eliminates the need to paint backgrounds, enabling artists to focus solely on the central themes of portraits and scenes.
Originally, these pieces were crafted by the Nepali community and traded to Tibet and various parts of India. These scrolls were made by local women, who earned income from their exquisite craftsmanship. Today, they continue to be produce using time-honored methods, symbolizing the fusion of Tibetan and Nepali cultures.

At Healing Hills, we are dedicated to promoting and supporting these local artisans, helping them gain recognition and flourish in their craft. Purchasing one of these handcrafted items not only supports the artisans directly but also contributes to the preservation of a tradition that has been alive for centuries.
